Could it have been possible that they simple were civilians, protecting their city against the Rebels invasion? I would be surprised to see much joy in Tripoli. I don't think the people will easily forget the many months of bombardment by the Rebel's friends of NATO. The Rebels could have stopped the killings and bombings, but they refused any peacetalks with the government, since they felt superior with the backing of the warplanes of NATO. We just have to see if the Transitional NATO Council can make Libya as good as it was under Gaddafi. A lot of beneficiary projects might already be canceled due to the thievery by NATO-countries of the Libyan assets (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYs_LrS_3YE) Original video found at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5I0wUqFo24

The UN has stopped all flights in and out of Libya and, during a seven hour wait to board the ferry to Malta, tempers flare. Despite these hardships Libya prospers. A Libyan official speaks frankly about his leader and admits mistakes have been made. He expresses regret for Libya’s backing of the IRA and says it was revenge for Britain’s part in the 1986 raid on Tripoli. We visit Gaddafi’'s bombed house - an eerie shrine to his daughter who died in that attack. Human rights abuses are detailed by a former university lecturer in Libya. He talks of lynchings in the university grounds. This film challenges the West’s view of Libya and looks at Gaddafi’s struggles both at home and abroad. Life is gradually getting back to normal in Tripoli, closing a chapter on Muammer Qaddafi. Flowing traffic and workers removing the remaining debris of battle reflect the improved security situation. In response to orders from the Transitional National Assembly, workers in the oil sector and other vital industries also resumed their duties. "We are ready to get back to production" said Hussein al-Mabrouk, Zueitina Oil Company's service manager. Restoring electricity is another priority. Mohammed al-Taher al-Tajouri says: "We are trying to provide the services on a regular basis, but there is too much damage. Some of the brothers returned to work, and we ask the rest to do the same." While a critical shortage of basic products continues, the markets were crowded with shoppers on a new day in the new Libya. Life is slowly returning to its normal course in Tripoli. Meanwhile, Libyans are waiting for their revolution to be fulfilled, a revolution that inspired the world. In a country providing them with essential services and one in which justice is guaranteed to all, rebels and their political leadership are trying to establish a new system. Meanwhile, the former regime has been reduced to armed groups chased and wanted by international authorities. Modern Tripoli is undergoing constant development. Contemporary architecture is everywhere with skyscrapers that contain offices and apartments that have been built on the periphery of the city. Around seventy kilometres west of Tripoli and also located on the Mediterranean coast are the remains of the ancient trading town of Sabratha. Its Theatre has been rebuilt and is still an impressive structure that dates back to the second century A.D. Tripoli, along with the historic towns of the former Tripolitania, is one of the most spectacular places of ancient culture in North Africa and the heritage of an advanced civilisation located on the edge of the Sahara.

As Libyan rebel forces appeared to gain ground to the west and south of Tripoli, the Gaddafi regime was keen to portray a 'business-as-usual' view of life in the capital during the holy month of Ramadan. Pictures filmed under strict Libyan government supervision show residents out shopping despite NATO airstrikes. One resident said: 'We do not care about the NATO anymore, we are living as we were before, we live, we do shopping, we do everything, actually we do not care anymore.' ... http://www.euronews.net/

Tripoli (Arabic: طرابلس‎ Ṭarābulus)- also طرابلس الغرب Ṭarābulus al-Gharb Libyan vernacular: Ṭrābləs pronunciation; derived from "Τρίπολη"; the Greek word for "three cities" in Greek: Τρίπολις Tripolis) is the largest city and capital of Libya. The Tripoli metropolitan area (district area) has a population of 1,065,405 (2006 census). The city is located in the northwest of the country on the edge of the desert, on a point of rocky land projecting into the Mediterranean Sea and forming a bay. Tripoli was founded in the 7th century BC by the Phoenicians, who named it Oea. Tripoli is the largest city, the principal sea port, and the largest commercial and manufacturing center in Libya. It is also the site of Al-Fateh University. Due to the city's long history, there are many sites of archaeological significance in Tripoli. The climate is typical Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers, cool winters and some modest rainfall. The city's old town is still unspoiled by mass-tourism, though it is increasingly being exposed to more and more visitors from abroad, following the lifting of the UN embargo in 2003. However, the walled Medina retains much of its serene old-world ambiance. The Assaraya al-Hamra (the Red Castle), a vast palace complex with numerous courtyards, dominates the city skyline and is located on the outskirts of the Medina. There are some classical statues and fountains from the Ottoman period scattered around the castle. The Gurgi and Karamanli mosques, with their intricate decorations and tilework, are examples of the artistic skills of local craftsmen. Just outside the Gurgi mosque is the Arch of Marcus Aurelius, the only surviving Roman monument in the city. More and more palaces (especially from the Karamanli period) are also being restored and opened to the public. The basic street plan of the medina was laid down in the Roman period when the walls were constructed as protection against attacks from the interior of Tripolitania, and are considered well planned, possibly better than modern street plans. In the 8th century a wall on the sea-facing side of the city was added. Three gates provided access to the old town: Bab Zanata in the west, Bab Hawara in the southeast and Bab Al-Bahr in the north wall. The city walls are still standing and can be climbed for good views of the city. The Bazaar is also known for its traditional ware; fine jewelery and clothes can be found in the local markets.

In the Libyan capital Tripoli life is getting back to something approaching normal even though electricity and water supplies remain sporadic. Shops and markets were open and residents were able to stock up on food. Elsewhere in the city, cleaners swept the streets of litter and spent bullet casings. On a main coastal road rebel fighters removed some roadblocks. ... http://www.euronews.net/
